Island Peak (6165m), also known as Imja Tse, is one of the most popular peaks in Nepal. It is located in Sagarmatha National Park in the Khumbu Region. Situated in the Everest Region, the busiest trekking destination in Nepal and in close proximity to Mt. Everest (8848.86m), the highest mountain of the world, it is easily accessible to most trekkers and climbers. Many climbers preparing to ascend Mt. Everest and other high mountains in the Khumbu Valley use Island peak as a part of their acclimatization process.
While Mera Peak Climbing is renowned for its stunning mountain views, Island Peak Climbing is known for its technical challenges. Technically, it is classified in the 2B grading category. Climbers attempting Island Peak must navigate various crevasses and ascend about a 150-meter-high rock wall with 45-degree slope before reaching the narrow summit ridge.
The Island Peak Climbing typically starts with 35 minutes’ thrilling flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (2850m), which is the most standard way to begin the trek. However, one can also drive from Kathmandu to Paiyan to start the trek. Similarly, a helicopter charter flight is another option. This allows travelers to fly to/from their desired location to commence or conclude the trek. Nevertheless, if you lack recent experience of travelling to high altitude regions, we do not recommend flying to higher elevations to start the trek.
