Overview

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is an enchanting journey into the eastern Himalayan region of Nepal. This trek takes you to the base of Mount Makalu (8,485 meters), the fifth-highest peak in the world. It is considered one of the off-the-beaten-path treks in Nepal, as it attracts fewer tourists compared to popular destinations such as Everest, Annapurna, and the Manaslu regions. Therefore, if you are looking for a peaceful and quiet trekking environment with close proximity to high mountains, this trek can be an excellent option. The Makalu Base Camp Trek also offers breathtaking views of picturesque villages, valleys, and mountain peaks, along with Shiva Dhara—one of the most religious and sacred sites in the region. As you travel through the Barun Valley, following the Barun River, you will also have the opportunity to witness a wide variety of flora and fauna.

The trek typically begins from Seduwa village in the Sankhuwasabha district, after a 35-minute scenic flight followed by a five-hour drive from Kathmandu. Alternatively, one can drive directly from Kathmandu, skipping the flight, although this option takes a longer time.

Special Features of the Trek

  • Trek to the closest proximity of Mount Makalu (8,485 meters), the world’s fifth-highest mountain.
  • Trek through the scenic Arun and Barun Valleys, among the most renowned valleys in eastern Nepal.
  • Discover the pristine Sherpa culture of the Makalu region, along with its untouched valleys, majestic mountains, and diverse flora and fauna.

Itinerary

WELCOME TO NEPAL, the land of the Himalayas!

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will receive a warm welcome from the company representatives of Osprey Adventure, who will assist you with your luggage and guide you to the hotel.  After checking into the hotel, the company representative will provide you with a comprehensive briefing about your upcoming trip, including inclusions and exclusions, safety precautions, cultural norms and other important information that will be useful during your stay in Nepal.

Breakfast will be served at the hotel. Your city tour guide will arrive promptly at the hotel with a private vehicle and driver. After breakfast, you will process to visit the following religious and historical sites, all of which are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1979 AD.

Swayambhunath is situated atop an elevated hill station in the heart of Kathmandu city, standing 77 meters above the city’s level, providing panoramic views of the entire Kathmandu valley. It is also famously known as “Monkey Temple” among tourists due to the abundance of monkeys found on the site. While primarily a Buddhist pilgrimage site, you can also find a Hindu temple harmoniously coexisting alongside the main temple of Swayambhunath.

Kathmandu Durbar Square, situated in the heart of Kathmandu, is the former Royal Palace of Nepal. “Durbar” translates to ‘palace’ in Nepali. It stands out as one of three durbar squares in the Kathmandu valley. Today, it serves as a key attraction for tourists, renowned as the center of medieval art and architecture.

Within the Durbar Square, your tour will encompass visits to several historical landmarks, including the ancient palace museum, the temple of Kumari (the living goddess of Nepal), Hanuman Dhoka, the Kasthamandap Temple, and the statue of Kal Bhairav.

Boudhanath is the largest stupa in Nepal, situated 11km northeast from the heart of Kathmandu city. Its magnificent size and mesmerizing shape are sure to leave you stunned. Historically, it is believed to have been built in the early 5th century and now stands as a beacon of Buddhist belief. Surrounding the stupa, there are many terrace restaurants where you can enjoy a lunch break.

Pashupatinath Temple stands as one of the largest and most revered shrines for Hindus worldwide. Situated on the western bank of the holy Bagmati River, which flows through the center of the Kathmandu valley, it also serves as a popular cremation site for Hindus. The majority of Hindus who pass away in the Kathmandu valley are brought to Pashupati for cremation, so it is highly likely that you will observe open-air cremations during your visit. Entrance to the main temple is restricted to Hindus only. However, even if you are non-Hindu, you can still observe the main temple from the eastern bank of the river.

You will have breakfast at 7:00 a.m., and you should pack your luggage before breakfast. This will be your daily routine until the end of the trek. Today marks the first day of your journey.

The total distance for the day is approximately 9 kilometers, which can be covered in about 3 to 4 hours. A road has been constructed up to Tashigaun village, making the walk relatively easier.

By lunchtime, you will reach Tashigaun, the last permanent village along the route. Beyond this point, you will only find temporary, seasonal lodges that operate during the trekking season.

Trek Duration 6 hours
Trek Distance 8.5 km
Altitude Gain 1400 meters

As you will be ascending approximately 1,400 meters over about six hours, you can expect most of today’s trail to involve a steep uphill climb. The day begins after a delicious breakfast. After the first 20 minutes, you will cross a small stream, after which the trail ascends through dense forest. If you are trekking in the spring season, the forest comes alive with colorful rhododendron and magnolia blooms. As you pass seasonal huts used for high-altitude cows and buffaloes, you may see these animals grazing in the surrounding pastures. After about three hours of ascent, you will reach Dandakharka, where you will stop for lunch.

Be sure to keep your warm clothes and raincoat ready in your day bag, as the weather can change unexpectedly with increasing altitude. After approximately three more hours of trekking from the lunch stop, you will reach Kongma, a small hill station offering wonderful views of the lower valleys.

Today is an acclimatization day. You can unwind with your favorite book or enjoy a short 45-minute hike to Kongma Danda for scenic views.

Trek Duration 6 hours
Trek Distance 10 km
Altitude Gain 150 meters

Today is the most challenging day of the trek, as you will cross Shipton La and Keke La, both at elevations of around 4,200 meters. The trail involves a series of ascents and descents. The day begins with a steep climb of about two hours, followed by a gradual descent of approximately 30 minutes. After passing a small pond, the trail ascends again for another hour until you reach the top of Shipton Pass, where lunch will be served.

From the pass, the trail descends for about 20 minutes until you reach a large pond, then ascends again for around 30 minutes to Keke Pass. From the top, you can enjoy impressive views of the deep valleys of the Barun Valley. After descending for about an hour from the pass, you will finally reach Dobato, a small campsite nestled on the mountainside.

Altitude Gain -100 meters

Be ready with your camera, as today is one of the most picturesque days of the entire trip. After walking along a relatively straight path for some time, the trail begins to descend steeply until you reach the bank of the Barun River, which flows directly from the base of Mount Makalu. It takes about one and a half hours to reach the riverbank from the lodge. Once there, you will follow the left bank, officially entering the Barun Valley. After about half an hour of walking along forested, zigzag trails, you will reach a landslide zone. Although the area is generally safe to cross, it is important to stay alert and avoid using earbuds or headphones, as there may be occasional rockfalls.

After crossing the landslide area, you will enter a beautiful, narrow, forested valley, where lunch will be served at Pemathang. From there, you will cross the river and continue along its right bank. Upon reaching Yangle Kharka, you can enjoy a wonderful view of Shiva Dhara, a well-known sacred site in the region. Yangle Kharka is also a seasonal pasture, where locals from lower villages bring their livestock during the autumn months.

Trek Duration 4.5 hours
Trek Distance 7.5 km
Altitude Gain 900 meters

Today is one of the shortest and most pleasant trekking days. The trail begins with a gentle walk along the riverbank on a relatively straight path for about one hour, followed by a steep climb through beautiful pine forests via stone steps for approximately 30 minutes. After this ascent, the trail continues on a gradual uphill stretch for another hour, offering peaceful views of the surrounding landscape. Just before reaching Langmale, you will face a final short but steep climb of about 30 minutes, and upon arrival, lunch will be served.

Trek Duration 5 hours
Trek Distance 8.5 km
Altitude Gain 420 meters

Today is the most important day of the trek, as you will reach your destination. Although the trail is relatively straight and easy, you may still find it challenging due to the high altitude, so maintain a steady pace and avoid rushing. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids throughout the walk. You will be amazed by the photogenic scenery along the trail, so take your time to capture these moments. After about 15 minutes of walking from Shersong, you will begin to see Mount Makalu directly ahead; if you have difficulty identifying it, simply look straight along the trail—the last peak on the right is Mount Makalu.

Once you arrive at Makalu Base Camp, lunch will be served. The base camp is generally warmer than you might expect, unless there are unfavorable weather conditions. It is one of the base camps of Nepal’s 8,000-meter peaks, offering one of the closest views of Mount Makalu.

Today is a contingency day. You may hike to explore Barun Lake at the base of Mount Makalu. This day has been reserved to account for any disruptions caused by bad weather. If you experience clear weather on the day you arrive at base camp, you may explore the lake on the same day rather than waiting, as mountain weather can change suddenly.

If you have already explored the base camp on the previous day, you may begin your descent further down, as advised by your guide or team leader.
